Dedham, Flatford & East Bergholt
A Pictorial History

Dedham, Flatford and East Bergholt are most famous today for their connections with the artist John Constable (1776-1837), who was born in East Bergholt and went to school in Dedham. His father owned the mills at Dedham and Flatford and Constable painted many of his most famous works in this locality. The River Stour, which runs between these settlements, played an early part in the area's colonisation - evidence of occupation here dates back to Roman times. Dedham and East Bergholt were also both major cloth towns, though today the main industry is Constable tourism.
